$2 million to quash quad-bike injuries
New funding could make one of Australia’s most dangerous vehicles safer.
The NSW Government has committed $2 million to improving quad bike safety, allowing rural businesses to apply for rebates for safety improvements up to a value of $500.
220 people have died in quad bike accidents across Australia since 2001, while many more have suffered injuries from the bikes.
The injuries can be made worse by the fact that most quad bikes are used in on-farm settings, so people are often located somewhere extremely remote when the incident occurs.
“Two million dollars is a limited amount of money at this stage, and the limit of $500 per enterprise is sort of going to slow it down,” NSW Farmers spokesperson Richard Charman told ABC reporters.
“If this scheme's taken up quite well maybe it could continue on and more people could take it up.”
The move has been welcomed by the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
