SafeWork South Australia is calling for applications for the prestigious 2013 Augusta Zadow scholarships, which support the health and safety of women in the workplace.

The two scholarships, valued at $10,000 each, are awarded annually to assist with workplace health and safety initiatives undertaken by, or for the benefit of, women in the South Australian workplace.

“We are looking for individuals or projects that can help make a difference to women’s safety at work,” said Bryan Russell, Executive Director of SafeWork SA.

“The scholarship money will help the recipient advance their workplace safety proposal through further education, research or developing a solution to a work health and safety issue faced by working women.”

The scholarships are named for Augusta Zadow, who became South Australia’s first female Inspector of Factories in 1895.

“An active trade unionist and suffragist, the dynamic Ms Zadow played a crucial role in securing better conditions for factory workers, particularly women and children,” Mr Russell said.

“Many of the working conditions we all now take for granted are due to the efforts of Augusta Zadow.”

Applications must be submitted by 27 August 2013.
