Braille crossings making Sydney safer
Sydney will soon feature the world's most comprehensive network of braille and tactile signs for the visually-impaired.
Over 2000 braille and raised-letter signs are being installed at pedestrian crossings in the City of Sydney area.
The aluminium panels feature street names and building numbers, and will be located next to push buttons at signalised crossings.
There are around 100,000 people with non-correctable vision loss in NSW; a number predicted to increase by more than 20 per cent by 2020.
Vision Australia spokesperson Rolf Geerings welcomed the signs, saying they will make life easier for many thousands of pedestrians.
