Building site pause after worker's death
Work has stopped at the new Royal Adelaide Hospital building site, following the death of worker Jorge Castillo-Riffo.
The site has been shut down after a meeting between management and Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) delegates, which saw mutual agreement that activity should stop out of respect for Mr Castillo-Riffo.
Castillo-Riffo was trapped between a scissor lift and a concrete slab in an incident last Thursday. He died the next day.
Workers paid homage to their fallen co-worker with a visit to the site and a minute’s silence.
CFMEU state secretary Aaron Cartledge says the union and management are reviewing the procedures of the site, and SafeWork SA will look into the fatal incident too.
The Royal Adelaide Hospital building site employs over a thousand workers and had been operating 24 hours a day.
