Cat-house compliance commended
Canberra’s brothels have scored top marks on compliance with industry specific safety laws, but general OHS is not getting as much love.
WorkSafe ACT inspectors have released data from sweeps of the capital’s 28 registered escort services, which shows that 35 improvement notices were issued last year.
The notices covered minor breaches of fire safety, emergency procedures, provision of first aid, material safety data sheets, amenities, slips, trips and falls, electrical equipment test and tag, duress alarms, and hazardous manual tasks.
All issues had been fixed upon second inspection.
None of the notices were handed out for breach of the Sexual Services Industry Code of Practice.
The 46-page code covers everything from brothel fire safety to correct cleaning processes for sex toys.
The Act includes some guidelines for preventing potential injuries, such as providing ergonomic beds to avoid back and wrist injury for workers.
It also recognises the risk of improperly clean bondage equipment.
“Leather equipment, such as whips, should be washed with hot soapy water and dried in the sun, then disinfected with 70 per cent alcohol and not used until they are dry.”
