DPS issues reported
The Department of Parliamentary Services (DPS), responsible for overseeing Parliament House and safeguarding Australia's democracy, is under scrutiny following allegations of a toxic work culture.
Critics claim the department silences dissent and covers up internal issues, contributing to a workplace atmosphere described as fearful and suspicious.
Employees have labelled it as a place where “the walls have eyes”.
An investigation by the ABC, involving interviews with current and former public servants, politicians, and various staff at Parliament House, revealed widespread use of the term “toxic” to describe the department.
Efforts to examine the department's practices are hindered by its unique exemption from Freedom of Information (FOI) laws. This exemption prevents the usual level of transparency and accountability expected of government departments.
