Funds to keep remote chance at safety
New funds mean a NSW farming facility can keep its doors open and continue keeping people safe.
As one of the most dangerous industries around, farming safety should be helped wherever it can.
Along these lines, the Australian Centre for Agricultural Health and Safety in Moree has been awarded $375,000 from the NSW Department of Health and Ageing.
There have been up to 100 deaths on farms per year in recent times, but the Centre’s director Associate Professor Tony Lower says many deadly incidences are avoidable.
“We have been trying to attain some core funding for the centre for the last four and a half years,” he told the ABC.
“And it's fantastic that this funding has come on board but it's a really large industry critical to Australia's whole economy... investing some 30 to $40 billion in to the Australian economy.
“And it's really important that there is an independent agency out there that can help farmers with their health and safety advice.”
There are a small handful of Australian organisations researching farm incidents and actually offering solutions for farm safety, showing a clear lack of investment in the field.
Federal Minister for Agriculture Barnaby Joyce says as much as the Government would like to fund initiatives to cut the farming death toll, there is not enough money to go around.
