A new standard is being created for comparing the energy efficiency of home heaters.

The Australian Government has initiated a public consultation on a proposed methodology for assessing the energy performance of residential space heaters.

It has issued a space heater comparison methodology paper to guide the discussion.

This consultation is aimed at refining a technical framework that could standardise the way different heater types are evaluated for energy efficiency.

The initiative is part of the Equipment Energy Efficiency (E3) Program, a collaborative effort between the Australian, state, and territory governments, along with New Zealand.

The goal of the program is to enhance the energy efficiency of household appliances and equipment across these regions.

The proposed methodology seeks to provide a consistent and fair basis for comparing various types of residential space heaters. Once developed, this methodology could form the basis for accessible consumer information, helping individuals make informed choices about the energy performance of different heater options.

Stakeholders and members of the public are invited to review the space heater comparison methodology paper and submit their feedback by 27 September 2024.
