Victorian MP Darren Cheeseman has resigned from the Labor Party following a series of allegations of misconduct towards his staff. 

Despite stepping down from his party, Cheeseman says he will continue to serve as the independent Member for South Barwon.

The controversy surrounding Cheeseman intensified over the past week, culminating in Premier Jacinta Allan demanding his resignation from the party on Monday. 

“This afternoon I received new information about further allegations of persistent, inappropriate behaviour by the Member for South Barwon towards another member of staff,” Allan said in a statement. 

“The wellbeing of staff and their right to a respectful workplace is not negotiable.”

Initially, last Friday, Cheeseman was asked to resign as Parliamentary Secretary for Education before his complete removal from the Labor caucus on Monday. 

New allegations surfaced this week following earlier claims about Cheeseman's conduct over the weekend.

The complaints allegedly entail persistent inappropriate comments directed at staff members, although there were no accusations of physical misconduct.

Having served as the Member for South Barwon since 2018, and previously as the federal MP for Corangamite from 2007 to 2013, Cheeseman’s roles have included significant responsibilities such as the Parliamentary Secretary for the Commonwealth Games before his recent education appointment.

Cheeseman has asked for privacy for himself and his family.
