NSW pushes national quad rules
The NSW Government wants a national approach to cut the number of quad bike accidents.
In New South Wales, 5 people have died on quad bikes this year, part of a total 32 fatal quad bike accidents since 2011.
The State Government has been giving double rebates for protective equipment and scrapped fees for training, but the state’s Minister for Better Regulation Matt Kean says the Commonwealth needs to develop a national strategy.
“Since 2011 there have been 114 deaths across the country — over 30 per cent of them have been in New South Wales,” Mr Kean said.
“We need to draw a line in the sand here because enough is enough, and we need to have a national strategy to deal with this issue once and for all.”
Mr Kean said manufacturers should be forced to bolster safety measures.
“I am calling on the Federal Government to partner with us to bring an end to these senseless deaths and senseless injuries; more can be done,” Mr Kean said.
“We are doing everything we can in New South Wales but we want back up from the Commonwealth to roll out a national strategy to force the manufacturers to start taking safety seriously.”
The NSW Government has requested a meeting to discuss the issue with Federal Employment Minister Michaelia Cash.
