Printing company fined for sacking over pregnancy
Sydney printing company Wongtas has been fined $20,000 by the Federal Court for discriminating against a pregnant worker by demoting and then sacking her.
The Fair Work Ombudsman launched the discrimination case after Jiongqui Ye was first demoted from her clerical position to a lower-paying packaging job when she returned to work following her pregnancy in late 2009, and then sacked.
The Federal Court has found the company engaged in abusive action on the grounds of gender and pregnancy.
The case was the first pregnancy discrimination complaint lodged under the new national workplace laws.
