Safety fine for WA council
The City of Armadale in WA has been fined over a serious injury.
The local government has been fined $110,000 after a man was hit by a front-end loader at a waste disposal site in 2014.
The man had been unloading green waste at the Hilbert landfill site when a loader driven by a site supervisor (employed by the City of Armadale) struck him.
The City of Armadale was originally fined $30,000 plus costs for failing to provide and maintain a safe workplace, but WorkSafe WA has now successfully appealed the sentence, and seen the penalty increased by $80,000.
WorkSafe said previous notices issued over similar matters had not been adequately addressed.
“The decision of the Court of Appeal and resultant increase in the penalty reinforces the message that safe systems of work need to be in place in areas where mobile plant is operating in the vicinity of pedestrians,” WorkSafe WA commissioner Darren Kavanagh said in a statement.
