The Western Australian Government has announced the appointment of former deputy commissioner of WA police Murray Lampard as the new chair of the Road Safety Council.

State Road Safety Minister, Liza Harvey, said Mr Lampard will assume the three year posting at the end of October. Since his retirement from the police force in 2008, Mr Lampard has held the position of professor of Law and Justice and Security Science at Edith Cowan University.

“Professor Lampard brings a wealth of policing experience with him to this role.  His blend of operational experience and understanding of academia and research is ideally suited to respond to significant road safety challenges,” Ms Harvey said.

Mrs Harvey thanked outgoing chair, D’Arcy Holman for his contribution to road safety in WA.

“Professor Holman has been a most respected adviser to the State Government on road safety issues, including implementation of the Government’s commitment to allocate 100 per cent of speed and red light camera fines to the fight against road trauma,” she said.

The Minister said Professor Holman, who took up the position in 2009 and whose term expires at the end of this month, had been dedicated and committed to his role.

“Professor Holman has been particularly effective at raising awareness of road safety issues in the community,” she said.
