About Us
Apunipima Cape York Health Council is a community controlled Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health service, which provides culturally appropriate, family centred, primary health care services to the communities and people of Cape York.

About the role

The purpose of the Workplace Health and Safety Officer is to provide expert workplace health and safety (WHS) advice and services to Apunipima managers and workforce. The Workplace Health and Safety Officer works closely with managers and employees to ensure legal compliance with relevant legislation and provide high level support, direction and guidance on workplace health and safety matters. The position is full time, permanent. 

About You
To be successful in this role you must have:

  • Experience providing WHS advice and information at an organisational level. 
  • Experience completing WHS audits, investigations and risk assessments.
  • Well-developed understanding of WHS legislation and standards.
  • Ability to investigate, research and apply critical reasoning to ensure effective strategies are applied in accordance with relevant legislation, policies and accredited systems.
  • Ability to identify hazards and develop, implement and monitor strategies to control risks in the workplace.
  • Sound interpersonal, negotiation and communication skills, with demonstrated ability to influence at all levels to secure appropriate support, decisions and/or outcomes.
  • Understanding of the historical and contemporary issues that impact on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their communities, particularly in Cape York.
  • Ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in accordance with community protocols and customs.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the principles of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community control.
  • Must be willing and have the ability to travel in Cape York either by light aircraft or 4WD as required.

Mandatory Requirements:

  • Tertiary qualification in Workplace Health and Safety or related discipline.
  • Current Queensland Drivers Licence.
  • Current Blue Card positive notice or exemption, or willing and able to obtain prior to commencement.
  • Australian Federal Police Check, or willing and able to obtain prior to commencement.
