Specialist Aviation Medical Officer

The Role
You will be working in an organisation that values innovation and expertise, collaborating with uniformed and civilian aviation medicine specialists to assess aircrew applicants’ fitness to undertake aircrew duties, and assessing trained aircrews’ ongoing medical fitness. 

In your role as Senior Aviation Medical Officer, you form part of a small close-knit team of specialists to deliver the following duties:

  • Provide expertise in aviation medicine, human physiology, human performance, health, safety, and wellbeing in processing of clinical cases and reviews.
  • Consult Defence health and aviation policies to effectively respond to complex case revision.
  • Assist the Senior Service Aviation Medicine Advisors (SSAMA) of the three ADF services in supporting continued aircrew throughput.
  • Conduct assessments for fitness to undertake aviation or controlling duties for applicants applying to join the ADF and for serving aircrew in accordance with Defence health and personnel policies.
  • Any other duties as directed by head of Clinical Flight.

About our Team
The RAAF Institute of Aviation Medicine (IAM) is the ADF centre of excellence for aviation medicine. IAM provides domain expertise in training, aviation medicine assessments, aviation medicine policy, human system integration and human factors in support of aviation capability across Air Force, Navy and Army. The IAM Clinical Flight undertake clinical case review for all applicants, serving aircrew and controllers within Defence in accordance with Defence health and safety policies. IAM Clinical Flight contributes to Defence aviation through consultation and collaboration with Defence Aviation Commands, Defence Safety Bureau and Defence Health.

Our Ideal Candidate
To succeed in the role, you will have personal drive and integrity with the ability to:

  • Undertake clinical reviews and assessments as directed by IAM.
  • Plan, provide advice, and deliver critical complex review activities within the aeromedical field, working to agreed priorities and outcomes.
  • Demonstrate effective verbal and written communication skills, which enable you to positively liaise with internal and external stakeholders as required.
  • Manage workflows and resources, prepare work area and team plans detailing measurable milestones and expected outcomes.
  • Manage concurrent activities with competing priorities within the boundaries and direction established by IAM.
  • Comply with organisational values and share in responsibility for the achievement of team goals and objectives.
  • Undertake literature reviews.
  • Have the ability to hold a valid Defence security clearance.
