The Northern Territory has introduced changes to the licensing of electrical contractors and workers.

The territory’s new Electrical Safety Act 2022 and Electrical Safety Regulations 2024 - now in force - mark a significant shift in regulatory responsibilities and licensing categories.

One of the major changes under the new laws is the abolition of the Electrical Workers and Contractors Licensing Board.

Licensing duties have been transferred to the Electrical Safety Regulator within NT WorkSafe. This shift is meant to centralise the oversight of electrical licensing and electrical safety under NT WorkSafe.

Existing licences will remain valid until their expiry dates. However, any licences renewed from 1 July 2024 will be issued under the new categories specified in the Electrical Safety Act and Regulations.

The introduction of the new laws has necessitated the development of new application and renewal forms. Applications submitted using the old forms will no longer be accepted.

The new forms can be accessed on the Electrical licensing page of the NT WorkSafe website.

There are also new requirements for certificates of compliance under the Electrical Safety Act 2022. Electrical contractors and workers are advised to review these new requirements to ensure compliance.
