About this Position  

The Risk Specialist is responsible for delivering and maintaining a risk management system suitable for the size and practice scope of the organisation. This may include rationalising existing systems to ensure they are suitable for the business needs and meet the capacity of teams. As well, the Risk Specialist works closely with third party providers to ensure the organisations insurances are current and suitable. The Risk Specialist in conjunction with a third-party providers coordinates the delivery and maintenance of the organisations critical incident management process.

The role supports a team that enables Beyond Blue to operate effectively and efficiently, and responds to business needs through fit for purpose, user-centric frameworks, governance, assurance, and advisory support – so our resources are used well, and our people make good decisions, balance risk with reward, and produce great community outcomes.

The role

The key duties of the role include:

Risk Management

  • Deliver an efficient risk management system appropriate to the scope, scale and capacity of the organisation
  • Facilitate team and organisational discussions and reviews of current risks
  • Review, develop and implement systems and procedures to appropriately manage risk
  • Assess, monitor and report on the effectiveness of risk controls
  • Manage and maintain the organisation’s risk registers
  • Report to the Management group on any material changes to the organisation’s risk profile and make recommendations to the group in relation to risk and safety
  • Develop succinct and informative Executive, Board and Board sub-committee level reporting on risk profile and controls
  • Internal lead of the systematic review of the risk management policy, framework and strategy
  • Support staff to develop risk assessments for activities (e.g. Fundraising, Events) and review those assessments prior to sign-off; and
  • Develop and provide training for staff as required.

Health, Safety and Wellbeing (HSW)

  • Working with the broader HSW team, keep up-to-date on legal and/or regulatory changes that may impact the organisation and make recommendations where existing procedures and practices may require review
  • Co-ordinate and oversee a program of risk-based audit/review, ensuring that all areas of the organisation are reviewed with sufficient frequency
  • Play an active role as a member of the organisation’s HSW Committee, including the compilation and submission of incident reporting.

Additional key activities

  • Facilitate and deliver group and individual training and workshops on risk management and other topics relevant to the role such as critical incident response and management
  • Co-ordinate the annual review of the Business Continuity Plans
  • Oversee and manage the organisation’s incident management procedures and systems including the software as a service system Brisk
  • Co-ordinate the annual Corporate Insurance renewal and source insurance products as required
  • Coordinate the organisation’s program of Critical Incident Management exercises
  • Oversee and continually develop the risk and incident management database, Brisk
  • Liaise with service providers and vendors to supply high quality goods and services within budget

About you

To be successful in the role, you will have:

  • Formal qualifications in Risk Management or WHS, or significant relevant experience in a similar environment/organisation
  • Practical knowledge of Australian Standards pertaining to risk management and WHS management systems
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and interpreting legislation/regulations, policies, procedures and guidelines
  • Strong understanding of, and experience with, risk management standards and theory
  • Demonstrated capacity to communicate effectively with and gain support from colleagues
  • Sound problem solving skills and demonstrated attention to detail
  • Demonstrated ability to lead initiatives and present effectively to a variety of audiences
  • Effective planning and development skills, including the ability to prioritise workload and manage competing demands
  • Knowledge of governance, risk, and compliance software
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines and work under pressure
  • Ability to exercise discretion and confidentiality, particularly when exposed to personal and/or sensitive information.
